There’s a famous statement in the personal development / human potential arenas many don’t quite understand. That’s the old saying, “Fake it ‘til you make it.”
“Fake it ‘til you make it.” Grab hold and nurture this concept, put it in your mind, in your heart, in your soul. Let it return and come back into your thoughts again and again because it is so important.
What it means is, number one, when you present yourself as the person who is – pick your niche: the world’s #1 salsa coach, the world’s #1 teacher of flamenco guitar, the one who understands futures and commodity trading in a new way… whatever it is – boom you’re the one.
When will you become that guru? The moment you decide you are that person. You see we coach all kinds: up and coming people, struggling people yearning to take off, and successful individuals ready to quantum up their game, and it comes back to decisions, to decisiveness again and again.
When you are another person… Hey, you changed by a decision! When you are that person it isn’t very hard to present yourself as that person. And in the beginning what that means is you do it even though that squawking voice up there is frantically reminding you, “This is your first time!”
Maybe. So what? All new behavior feels odd at first. That doesn’t mean you can’t successfully navigate and feel the strangeness simultaneously at the same time…
So what does it mean, “Fake it ‘til you make it”?
Nobody wants to do business with a loser. The same, nobody want to be the first to give you a chance. So – assuming the power – you present yourself as one of competence.
You have to present yourself. You have to present yourself to convince yourself. You rehearse, you put yourself in motion and, by the way, the map is not the territory. Things will be different, no biggie.
You decide. You move. That’s what it means by “Fake it ‘til you make it.” You decide you’re the “world’s top pilates for weight loss trainer”! And unless someone else is using that title currently – in which case you wouldn’t choose that title – who’s to say you’re not?!
